Terms of Use
Last updated: October 2026. This document is written in plain English. It should be reviewed by a qualified solicitor before public launch.
What School Pledge is
School Pledge is a voluntary platform that lets parents of primary school children sign a pledge to delay giving their child a smartphone. It is operated by Freastar. Participation is entirely optional for both schools and parents.
What School Pledge is not
- It is not a ban, a policy, or a legal commitment. A pledge is a good-faith statement of intent, nothing more.
- It is not run by any school, Department of Education, or government body.
- It is not an anti-technology campaign. It is about timing — waiting until later in childhood.
Who can use School Pledge
- Schools: a principal, teacher, or other staff member authorised by the school may register the school. By registering, you confirm you are authorised to do so.
- Parents or guardians: you may submit a pledge for a child in your care. You must be 18 or over.
How a pledge works
A pledge records only aggregate data: the number of children, their class group, and (optionally) a reason category. No child names are collected.
A pledge is a personal commitment between you and your family. We do not enforce it, verify it, or follow up. You may change your mind at any time — the pledge is not legally binding.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Submit false or misleading pledges or school registrations.
- Register a school you are not authorised to register, or use the platform to impersonate a school.
- Use automated means to submit pledges, scrape the site, or otherwise interfere with its operation.
- Attempt to identify any individual family from the aggregate statistics.
Content and accuracy
We try to keep the information on School Pledge accurate and up-to-date, but we provide the service “as is”. Uptake percentages are based on school-provided enrolment estimates and are indicative only. We make no warranty that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or suitable for any particular purpose.
Suspension and removal
We may remove a school registration or pledge, or restrict access to the service, if we reasonably believe it is being misused. Schools can also request removal of their own registration at any time — see the Privacy Policy for details.
Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Freastar is not liable for any indirect or consequential loss arising from use of the service. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited under Irish law, including liability for personal injury or death caused by negligence.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Ireland. Any dispute will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Irish courts.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top of the page will reflect the most recent change. Significant changes will be flagged on the homepage.
